Managing Turnover in the Hotel Biz

Welcome to yet another edition of the Cranky Middle Manager. Before I give you the show notes, let me share something with you.

I’m a little bummed today because I had to fire a friend of mine- why is irrelevant except to say that it was deserved but it doesn’t stink any less. Now we know that the stages of death are ;
Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance.

Getting sacked is the same process….
Denial: I didn’t do that…
Anger : Everyone Does it….
Bargaining : I’ll never do it again…
Depression: It doesn’t matter what I do…
Acceptance: Okay, I have stuff to do – can I get a reference?

Now, if being fired is like dying, what does that make being the person who does the firing? Are we no better than murderers? Well I’d like to think we are but think about it, firing someone :

Is premeditated
Is always done with approval of my superiors
Is designed to send a message and
Is often done in Italian restaurants.

Yes it’s not just murder- it’s a mob hit. The difference is that there’s no witness relocation program for managers. Why would they send us somewhere in the middle of nowhere, nobody knows who we are or recognizes us for what we’ve done in the past- that’s the job most of us already have.

Note to self….never fire someone too early in the afternoon, you have too much time to think about stuff the rest of the day.
