Tom Peters called it “Brand You”. Lots of people talk about it. Today we’re going to talk personal branding with one of the more interesting folks I’ve run across, Rajesh Setty. He’s written an e-book called “Personal Branding for IT Professionals”. He’ll talk about how it applies to all managers, everywhere. this one is for your own career and the future of your direct reports.
Rajesh is the author of the book Beyond Code- with a forward by Tom Peters, so you know he’s connected, and the “Life Beyond Code” Blog. He also possesses a skill I’m trying to cultivate- he’s a world class networker. He’s the one who hooked me up with Naveen Lakkur for show #39.
SHOW NOTES
0:00 Welcome to the show. All my life I’ve avoided the term “networking”, but nothing else fits. This week’s guest does it all- or at least a lot of it. This show is for those of us who want to further our career while still adding value to our employers. Blame it on Tom Peters and “Brand You”.
2:07 Captain Henry Morgan knew something about creating a brand. Okay, a pirate may not be a role model….but then again why not?
3:23 The quote of the week. Getting a reputation is a good thing- right?
5:04 Welcome Rajesh Setty, the author of “Personal Branding for IT Professionals”. Why is branding so important and how does it differ from selfishness? If you don’t stand out, how do you expect to get noticed? For a copy of his e-book, CLICK_HERE.
9:25 What is a personal brand and why do managers care? It’s a promise you make to the world.
13:00 What kind of things would make a company proud of its employees?
16:35 When does this become counter-productive?
22:25 This is the coolest concept I’ve heard in a while… ROII- Return on Investment for the Interaction. Do you add value to the people you meet and network with? Are you worth your boss’s time or not? Imagine adding value every time you talk to someone- the mind boggles.
29:47 Who does Rajesh follow? His blog roll is impressive but here’s the highlights…
Tom Peters…. him again! He wrote the introduction to Rajesh’s book. A tale of perseverence! Here’s the lesson of the day: Dream big and get lucky
