Thanks to Cam Reilly  and Ewan Spence…. I’m still in Israel, having a great time like the history geek I am. I’ll have show 69 up over next weekend- Monday the 6th at the latest.
Talk to you all soon.
This is your humble servant in front of the Faith Arch in Jaffa, Israel. it depicts scenes from stories important to all 3 Faiths of the Book- The battle of Jericho, Abraham offering Isaac, and Jacob’s ladder.Â
The Cranky Middle Manager on Tour in London…
Posted on 29. Oct, 2006 by Wayne in General
Folks, as I write this I’ve just landed in Israel for 5 days of work after spending 3 days in London. While I’m on duty for the Dreaded Day Job (actually a fine job with Communispond) I also managed to meet up with some CMM listeners and had a great time with each:
Katy Whitton was kind enough to come in from Buckinghamshire for the day. We must have put on about 10 miles just wandering around London…. those long legs of hers never stop moving which is hard on a fat old guy like me….Katy is a young web developer who has done some terrific work on managing web projects. You can find her blog called Flipping Heck. She’s also been a big fan of the show and helped edit my e-book, “Meet Like You Mean It- a Cranky Middle Manager’s Guide to Painless and Productive Meetings” Check out her blog here…. can’t wait for the book Katy!
Charlie Helliwell was a recent guest on the show (show 67). When he invited this Colonial to “his club” for dinner, how could I say no? We had a great time, accomplished absolutely nothing constructive but laughed and carried on and chased everyone out of the dining room. You can find Charlie here.
Finally I met the mysterious Quiller. Because he’s hiding behind a pseudonym (and because we talked so much and forgot to pull the camera out) I won’t show his face, but you should read his blog…it’s good stuff.
Now i’m in Herzeliya, Israel, where I know we have listeners.I want to thank all of you from wherever you are for listening, reading and coresponding. The internet has, as Quiller points out, not been the impersonal isolating tool it was thought to be but the best networking tool ever invented….even if it’s just to give me someone to share a pint with in a strange country.Â
The business world is shrinking and it’s all six degrees of Tom Peters.
There May Be a Problem With The Last Download….
Posted on 27. Oct, 2006 by Wayne in General
Folks, I just found out there may be a problem with Show 68- it stops suddenly. I don’t know what the problem is, but it should be an easy fix- the problem is that I’m in London en route to Tel Aviv and won’t be able to do that fix for about a week. I will keep you posted.
Please know that I’m really sorry for the problem- and apologize profusely to Bob Parkinson- we’ll get his show up properly just as soon as I can. This is the first time this has happened in 68 shows and HAS to happen when I’m out of the country and can’t fix it right away.
I’ll keep you up on what’s happening.
The Cranky Middle Manager Show #68 Becoming a Successful Manager with Bob Parkinson

The Cranky Middle Manager Show #068
0:00 Today we talk with Bob Parkinson, author of the new book Mottoes for Managers and the classic Becoming a Successful Manager. Before we get started though, someone said something in a blog post about my show being more of a humor show than a business show. Do you think that’s true? Why does that bother me so much? Post to the blog and tell me what you think! This is learning, not the priesthood….or is it?
3:02 This show is dedicated to Thomas Alexandre Dumas…. General, War Hero and Former Slave.
4:39 The quote of the week is from Bob’s book on Mottoes for Managers AND Â Francois De La Rouchefoucauld
5:39 Welcome Dr. Bob Parkinson, co-author of “Becoming a Successful Manager- Moving from Managing Yourself to Managing Others”. There are 3 things a manager has to be-
1) a Teacher
2) a Counselor
3) a Gardener….yes my bad joke aside, a gardener. Bob explains.
9:26 Managers create the culture- which is a result of attitude and behaviors. The secret is past tense vs. future tense….
14:18Â Â AÂ lot of new managers struggle with the concept of listening effectively. This isn’t the same as being good at piling up boxes….
17:36 Gardeners have to prune, and that isn’t always pretty, but on-going communication makes it less traumatic- to both parties.
26:17 Bob likes to use quotes to illustrate points about management….. who would ever think of that huh? His new book is full of good stuff.
29;40 Bob offers a couple of resources beside his books. One is “If Harry Potter Ran General Electric” and it’s cohort “If Aristotle Ran General Motors” by Tom Morris.
He also suggests Kiss, Bow or Shake Hands- How to Do Business in Over 60 Countries
