The Cranky Middle Manager Show #89 Get Ignited with Vince Thompson
The Cranky Middle Manager Show #089
Welcome gang. Today we speak to long-time listener and first time author Vince Thompson about his terrific new book, Ignited-Managers Light up Your Company and Career
Show Notes
0:00 We dedicate the show to the Chinese General Yueh Fei- pretty much the symbol of loyalty. Nothing like having the mission statement tattooed on your body to show your dedication.
2:57 Francis Bacon says it like it’s easy- consistently doing the right thing is harder than it looks but dang if it don’t work.
3:45 Welcome Vince who is going to heaven with his boots on- not only has he been a long time listener of the show, but is a sales person who actually acts like he cares about the rest of us! What brought him into the light? We also give a plug to Lisa Haneberg.
6:30 We live in what Vince calls “Quake Country”- the ground never stops shifting under managers’ feet. His book talks about the Manager’s Universe.
10:47 What do you do when you have a bad boss? Hey, these are your questions as much as mine…. Check out his website for the graphic that accompanies this discussion.
15:45 Vince gives some love to Jeffrey Fox, who’s been a guest on this show (check out his interview here) as well about undermining Office Assassins. It’s all about forming alliances and reaching out- but we’re in the right place to get it done.
19:34 Vince talks about “ignition points”- the places in a manager’s real world that make the difference. They are things like Process, People, Message, the Landscape and the Strategy, Telling the story and Being a healer. I want to get into depth on Process- no high-faluting Leadership talk, just getting it done day by day.
24:45 There are great examples in the book, and Vince tells one of the stories. Just a little inspiration for you today….
28:21 What’s Vince reading and watching these days?

Great podcast. I think the relationship diagram alone was worth the price of admission. It’s a great twist on the standard Social Network Analysis diagram that helps you analyze relationships so that you can get more done.

[...] A few episodes ago we spoke to Vince Thompson about his book “Ignited” . In it, he spoke about real Middle Managers (we’re not cringing at that title any more, remember?) who really did great, inspiring work and he mentioned Andy Pawlowski of Rawlings Sporting Goods. Well, i thought we’d just chat with Andy about some of the cool things he’s done. I want to work for him when I grow up! [...]
