Welcome to the first show of 2008. Today we’re talking to Nick McCormick of Be Good Ventures .

By the time you read this, we’ll have finished our first ever CMM Webinar. Technology allowing, we’ll record it and post it for everyone to watch- but you know me and technology. Meanwhile…don’t forget if you’re interested in learning how you and your company can use web presentation tools more effectively, check out my new site www.greatwebmeetings.com.

Show Notes

0:00 Today we look at something I am, admittedly, God-awful at: Time Management. If you want to know why this matters, we’re dedicating this show to Pherecydes of Syros. Before him, no one knew if you were late for work apparently.

2:20 Today’s quote is from the Roman poet Ovid. Who knew a good business quote could come from someone famous for his love poetry… of course those were the days before HR departments or IT guys who could scan your email so maybe it was more common back then……

3:00 Welcome Nick McCormick, author of the Trekkie sounding “Lead Well and Prosper”. I became aware of him through Phil Gerbyshak over at Make It Great and Slacker Manager. The man is everywhere…..anyway, not to put too fine a point on things I suck at managing my time. Think Nick can help?? Hey we’re just trying to be good managers… and that oughta be enough.

8:22 With trying to set up a new company and balance all I have going on, Time Management is probably my bete noir. I haven’t even gotten around to reading “Getting Things Done”, although I did interview David Allen about 2 years or so ago. And what’s wrong with my To-Do List anyway?????

11:10 There are lots of great tools out there… but maybe the best one is the Off button. TURN STUFF OFF and tell the world to leave you alone for a while. It is doable…

17:45 Control the number of meetings you go to… and don’t be afraid to be too busy to schedule you. (This is also a good time to shamelessly plug my e-book “Meet Like You Mean It”)

21:00 Nick’s main characters are Joe Kerr and Wanda B Goode… they’re on his blog as well as in the book.

23:00 Cool resources include How To Become a Great Boss by Jeffrey Fox (hear his conversation with us here…)

Dear Boss by William Werther

The audio book version of Who Says Elephants Can’t Dance…. Louis Gerstner

  1. Phil Gerbyshak Says:

Thanks Wayne (I think) for the mention. Another great interview. I definitely appreciate the time management skills. Nicely done Nick!

Just a note: no cats were swung as a result of this comment.

  2. TPN :: The Cranky Middle Manager Show » Blog Archive » Nick McCormick’s 100th blog post anniversary…. Says:

[...] Hey folks, I’m sure you remember Nick McCormick (If you don’t here’s the link to his show). Well he just celebrated his 100th blog post, and to celebrate the milestone, he’s giving away a free copy of “Lead Well and Prosper” (the book that put Joe and Wanda on the map) to 5 random guests who comment on the post [...]
